Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott did not get an extension over the offseason, which means when he takes the field for the preseason, he will officially be in his walk year. Whatever he does from then on will matter tremendously for his contract at the end of the season.
However, he might not have much preseason action to ramp up or to show his stuff. He's an established star, and teams have shifted away from playing players of his caliber that often during the preseason. Injuries are too common and costly for that. So will Prescott play the preseason opener?
Dak Prescott will not play on Sunday. Moreover, he missed practice as well as a precaution for an ankle injury.
A lot of teams have adopted this strategy, especially with quarterbacks. The Dallas Cowboys, however, were earlier on that trend than most. The reps he would get at this stage in his career just aren't as valuable when weighed against the risk of major injury.

Perhaps he comes out a bit rusty to open the NFL regular season, but at least he'll come out instead of suffering an ankle injury and missing the first four games because he played in the preseason.
Plenty of Cowboys starters will play during the preseason, though probably not very much. Prescott likely won't, and he's certainly not playing today for the opener.
