Birmingham Stallions coach Skip Holtz has become the talk of the town after his team suffered its first loss in the UFL on Saturday. The Stallions fell to the San Antonio Brahmas 18-9.

Following Holtz's first defeat in the inaugural UFL season, fans have been curious to learn more about his family, especially his father Lou Holtz, who had a legendary coaching career before becoming a television analyst.

Lou Holtz was born to Anne Marie and Andrew Holtz on Jan. 6, 1937, in Follansbee, West Virginia. He attended East Liverpool High School in Ohio and later committed to Kent State University where he played two years as a linebacker on the Golden Flashes' football team.

In 1959, Lou graduated with a degree in history. However, he chose to pursue a career in coaching and joined the Iowa football team as an assistant coach in 1960. He also worked as an assistant at William & Mary, Connecticut, South Carolina, and Ohio before returning to William and Mary in 1969 as the head coach.

Lou also served as the coach for NC State for three years before taking up the coaching job for the New York Jets of the NFL in 1976. His stint with the Jets didn't last long, as he resigned 10 months into the job after leading the Jets to a 3–10 record.

Following a failed run in the NFL, Lou returned to college-level coaching with Arkansas in 1977. He also worked at Minnesota (1984 to 1985), Notre Dame (1986 to 1996) and South Carolina (1999 to 2004) before retiring.

Across 34 years as a head coach at the collegiate level, Lou racked up a 249–132–7. The highlight of his career was winning the national title with Notre Dame in 1998. In May 2008. Holtz was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

After coaching, Lou ventured into broadcasting and has worked as a football analyst with CBS and ESPN.

Lou Holtz married Beth Barcus on July 22, 1961. The couple was together until her death from cancer on June 30, 2020. They had four children, Skip, Elizabeth, Kevin, and Luanne. Apart from football, Lou is a long-time supporter of the Republican Party.

Lou's son Skip Holtz has followed in his father's footsteps since leaving college and has remained associated with football coaching. After working as a head coach at Connecticut, East Carolina, South Florida, and Louisiana Tech, he took the Birmingham Stallions coaching job in the USFL in 2022 and won back-to-back championships.

Now, Holtz will want to guide the Stallions to the UFL championship in its inaugural season.
