Jamal Adams injury update: Is the Seahawks safety out for the season?

Jamal Adams of the Seattle Seahawks is carted off the field

The 2022 campaign for Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams ended practically before it started. Adams suffered an injury in the opening contest of the campaign versus the Denver Broncos. He played just 15 snaps before he sustained a severe quad injury, necessitating surgery and placing him on IR.

It was another heartbreaking setback for Adams, who didn't struggle with injuries during his time at the New York Jets. He has now gone three years in a row with catastrophic injury setbacks. As of yet, Adams is still on IR and looks set to miss the rest of the season.

It seemed like a significant setback for a Seahawks side that was expected to depend on its defense and running game. Both of which had to perform to conceal what was conceived to be their quarterback's shortcomings. Quarterback Geno Smith, however, has been one of the surprises of the 2022 season, and the Seahawks have managed a 7-5 record and are second in the NFC West.

Adams will have played only 25 out of a potential 50 games in the regular season throughout his three seasons in Seattle. This is an unfortunate record compared to the two games he sat out in his first three years with the New York Jets.

Adams looked good in a rehabilitation session video he posted on his Twitter account in November. However, it's still not anticipated that he will return for this campaign.

What happened to Jamal Adams?

After knocking Russell Wilson to the ground during the victory in Week 1, Adams tore his quad tendon and left the game hobbling. Adams was able to walk to the medical tent by himself, but he ultimately had to take the cart to the dressing room.

During his first two seasons with the Seahawks, Adams only appeared in nine games total. He was planning to play with an injured finger he sustained in training camp, but the quad injury ended those plans after just one appearance.

Jamal Adams' stats with Seattle Seahawks

Jamal Adams is a three-time All-Pro safety. He established the league record for a defensive back in 2020 by recording 9.5 sacks in 12 games despite missing four due to injury. The Seattle Seahawks believed that opponents' increased focus on Adams in 2021 (which saw him go 12 games without a sack before tearing his left labrum) was mainly to blame for his underwhelming performance.
