Justin Herbert has been having a comeback of sorts in 2024. After a broken finger ended his 2023 campaign after 13 games, he has been on tear, hitting at least 100 yards in the first six games of the season.
On Monday night, he and the Los Angeles Chargers sought their fourth win at the Arizona Cardinals. The game was a punishing defenseive grindfest, kicked off by a seeming Teair Tart interception on Kyler Murray that James Conner punched out of his hands, allowing Michael Wilson to recover the ball for a new set of downs.
Points were few and far in between, but the Cardinals eventually won 17-15 via a last-second field goal by Chad Ryland. So how did Herbert fare in the game?

Long gone are the days when Justin Herbert would reliably find either Keenan Allen or Mike Williams for deep plays. The former was traded to the Chicago Bears early in the offseason, while the latter was released and joined the New York Jets.
On Monday, that lack of WR depth would haunt him. Throughout the sixty minutes, his best target was tight end Will Dissly (eight catches for 81 yards). With Quentin Johnston out because of an ankle injury the best wideout was Josh Palmer with four for 63.
Even as he dominated in the air, Herbert simply could not find the endzone on all the Chargers’ scoring drives. Instead, they all ended in a Cameron Dicker field goal after the Cardinals defense, led by rookie cornerback Max Melton, and veterans Budda Baker and Kyzir White, shut down any attempts to progress past third down (the Chargers went 6/14 on such a situation).
And that would prove costly in the end. Kyler Murray, by contrast, threw for only 145 yards; but his two touchdowns (one passing and receiving each) were enough material to set up Chad Ryland with two seconds left in the game.
