Jerry Jones continues to face criticism for the team he put on the field this season and the way he has handled personnel matters. The Dallas Cowboys owner's philosophy of being "all in" this season has been questioned, and one former NFL player believes that Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy should depart on his own accord.
Former NFL guard and three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth said on Wednesday's broadcast of "Breakfast Ball," that Jones' treatment is disrespectful to McCarthy. This is the final season of McCarthy's contract and Schlereth said that if he were in that position, he would announce that he isn't interested in re-signing with the team.
"I just find it so disingenuous when Jerry Jones says, 'Hey, listen, we're still in the evaluation process, hey, he's under consideration,'" Schelereth said. "If I'm Mike McCarthy, I'd like to get up on the podium and just say, 'Hey, listen, man, I'm looking forward to being a coaching free agent, because there's no way I'm signing a contract to work here.' Yeah, it is just so disrespectful, based upon what he's (McCarthy) already done in this organization."
Mike McCarthy was hired as the coach of the Dallas Cowboys in January 2020.
Jerry Jones said that he would be open to re-signing Mike McCarthy
Mark Schlereth's comments come after Jerry Jones said that he would be open to signing Mike McCarthy to a contract extension. He talked about this during his weekly radio show appearance on the 105.3 The Fan's "Shan & RJ" show on Tuesday.
When asked if it was "crazy" that McCarthy could be re-signed despite a 4-7 record, Jones responded by saying that it is a possibility.
"I don't think that's crazy at all," Jones said. "That's not crazy. And listen, Mike McCarthy is one outstanding coach. This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there, done that. He's got great ideas.
"So, bottom line is, in no place, in my body language or anything else, have you seen indications about what we're going to be doing relative to this staff at the end of this year. And we shouldn't. We got a lot of football left. Six football games, that's a lifetime."
While Jones is open to the idea, he also wouldn't fully commit to any coaching decisions until after the season.
