Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers are having a tough season. Fresh off a Super Bowl appearance, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime, they have not been able to replicate their 2023 performances and currently have a 5-6 record, out of the NFC playoff picture.
On Sunday, the 49ers lost their second straight game, easily handled by the Green Bay Packers 38-10. Purdy, who's dealing with a right shoulder injury, missed the game along with fellow superstars Nick Bosa and Trent Williams. But San Francisco might have him back.
49ers beat writer Nick Wagoner said on Monday that the quarterback did some light throwing and, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, no problems were raised. He'll test himself through the week, but there's a chance he could return to play against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night.
In Purdy's absence, backup quarterback Brandon Allen played in Green Bay, and he had a solid but uninspiring game, finishing with 17 completions out of 29 attempts, 199 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was not helped by his running game, which averaged just 2.8 yards per carry.
Brock Purdy's silver lining in tough season for San Francisco 49ers
After 12 weeks, the 49ers are currently in last place in the NFC West, and their schedule until the end of the season isn't easy. One of the few positives for them has been Brock Purdy's level. The quarterback has developed even further, even if the offense around him regressed.
In 2024, he has 13 touchdowns, eight interceptions, a 66% completion rate and he has thrown for 2,613 yards. Although the team is 5-5 during his starts, much of this is due to San Francisco's defensive regression, especially with new defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen struggling on the job.
The NFC West is still up for grabs to all four teams. The Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals are 6-5, while the Los Angeles Rams and the 49ers are 5-6. There's still a chance of making the playoffs, but they have to improve drastically to fight for the conference again.
