Green Bay Packers v Detroit Lions

After another frustrating loss to the Detroit Lions, Aaron Rodgers' position is being doubted as the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. While it is too early to bin the back-to-back NFL MVP in the last two years, questions must now be asked about the future. It will become especially acute if they lose any more games this season and Aaron Rodgers is unable to stop the slide. With Jordan Love waiting in the wings, this season could be a make-or-break for the incumbent starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.

One fact that might save Rodgers, though, is the new contract extension he just signed at the beginning of the year. That ties him up for the upcoming seasons and makes it painful for the Green Bay Packers to cut ties immediately. Its value is an eye-watering $150.815 million over the next three years. $101.51 million is reported to be guaranted in that deal.

How much does Aaron Rodgers make per game?

In the first year of this contract in 2022, $40.8 million is reported to be guaranteed. $24.5 million of that is a signing bonus. The rest is his game earning of $1.15 million per game over 17 games.

Next year, his earnings per game are expected to rise a further ten percent to $1.165 million. $13 million is expected to be the signing bonus. With $14.575 million also expected to be part of an option bonus, $58.3 is guaranteed in 2023.

The contract also runs to 2024 but is against an injury guarantee then, when he is expected to earn $2,25 million per game.

These terms give Aaron Rodgers a strong hand with the Packers. But when the Packers gave him the new contract, they had no reason to doubt it may backfire. He was the NFL MVP in each of the last two seasons. He had thrown a league-best 48 touchdowns in 2020. But over the last two years, what has really set him apart is his lack of interceptions. He has thrown just 9 interceptions in the past two seasons combined compared 85 touchdowns.

What happened to Aaron Rodgers? How many interceptions did he throw against Lions?

This season, that touch seems to have deserted him. He has only thrown for 14 touchdowns with nine weeks gone. At the same rate, he is going to throw below 27 touchdowns after 17 games, which will be his lowest ever for a full season. Meanwhile, he has thrown seven interceptions already this season, the same as the entirety of last season. Three of those interceptions came in the ugly loss to the Lions today, with all of them in the redzone ruling out potential touchdowns. This is a career-first for Aaron Rodgers, having never before thrown more than one redzone interception in a game ever.

Much is going wrong for Aaron Rodgers at the moment. Even though he has the relative security of a contract, no franchise will tolerate poor performances from their quarterback for very long. He needs to up his game to justify his continued selection as the starting quarterback as well as in the monetary compensation he is earning.
