Aqib Talib was named as one of the defendants in a million-dollar lawsuit brought forth by the family of youth football coach Michael Hickmon. In August of this year, Talib's brother, Yaqub, allegedly shot and killed Hickmon. The lawsuit claims the former NFL star played a major role in starting the fight leading to Yaqub's alleged shooting of Hickmon.
Two days following the shooting and a day after being wanted as a suspect, Yaqub turned himself into police custody on his own accord. He was later charged by a grand jury. In September, Clark Birdsall, Yaqub's attorney, noted that his client Yaqub has a case for self-defense. Here's what Birdsall said:
“The people that went forth to the police officers were parents of the team to which that coach was connected. And they all conveniently forgot to mention ... those self-defense issues.”
Yaqub's attorney added that the claims against Aqib Talib were not true and that he has not been charged with a crime since the shooting. However, he left his Amazon broadcasting job subsequent to Yaqub being taken into custody.
What happened in the incident involving Aqib Talib and his brother?
On Aug.13, video footage showed a large brawl between several adults before shots were fired near a youth football field. Witnesses close to the scene later told reporter Rebecca Lopez of WFAA TV in Dallas that Aqib Talib initiated the scuffle when he hit Hickmon.
The Talibs supposedly concluded the youth football game early after a taunting penalty on the Bobcats, a team backed financially by Aqib. The sons of the Talib brothers reportedly played for the Bobcats. When Hickmon went over to the opposing sideline to get his son's football, Aqib Talib reportedly tried to fight Hickmon.
Hickmon reportedly tried to back away but tumbled over. Yaqub then allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot at Hickmon five times. Hickmon died later that evening at Methodist Central Hospital in Dallas due to gunshots. We'll keep you up to date with the lawsuit involving the former Denver Broncos star and his brother.
