Zach Wilson was drafted by the New York Jets in an attempt to snap the team's age-old woes at quarterback. However, after Sunday's struggle against the New England Patriots, head coach Robert Saleh took a step back on the assumption that the quarterback would be playing this weekend.
Speaking on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, NFL analyst Colin Cowherd listed a number of players that are not afraid to admit when they're the problem. However, after Wilson stated that he wasn't the issue in New Jersey, Cowherd explained why the head coach chose that moment to put his job on the ropes:
"He's a little small. He's a little undisciplined. He tends to be a little cocky. And the little stuff is hard. The little stuff like acknowledging when you're the issue. If Josh Allen stinks, he admits it. If Joe Burrow stinks, he admits it. If Lamar Jackson stinks, he admits that. If Aaron Rodgers stinks, he admits it."
Cowherd continued, explaining why Saleh believed Wilson was at the core of the issue:
"Listen, this is New York. This ownership is impatient. Robert Saleh is sitting around thinking, 'How long do I got to wait? My GM's given me players. I'm building a great defense. It's the offense holding us back.'"
Zach Wilson's bizarre breakout
The New York Jets are above .500 in November for the first time in years. However, in a quarterback-driven sport, the team's rise hasn't been particularly led by Zach Wilson. Typically, quarterbacks "pop" in their second season. Despite the team's solid win-loss record of 6-4, their quarterback hasn't been effective in driving the offense.
This season, the quarterback has thrown for four touchdowns and five interceptions. In his rookie season, he threw for nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions. While his record has risen considerably from 3-10 last year, he is still on pace to finish with more interceptions than touchdowns.
