Fans reacted as Sam Hartman may not be playing in the NFL after all, at least not for a long time.
On Wednesday, the former Wake Forest and Notre Dame quarterback, who had been signed by the Washington Commanders as an undrafted free agent, was selected ninth overall by the Birmingham Stallions in the 2024 UFL College Draft.

Under UFL rules, any draftees who sign a contract has an "out" until December 31, which allows them to suit up for their NFL team. That has caused Commanders fans to wish for Hartman to return to the bigger league:

"Give us back our QB," one tweeted.
Here are some more reactions:
"Female attendance has just gone up by 85%," one jokingly "announced".
"They bout to win again", another fan lamented.
"I bet he took a pay cut", another's theory went.
Other notable players beside Sam Hartman in the 2024 UFL College Draft
Overall, there were seven quarterbacks drafted to the UFL on Wednesday, with Sam Hartman gaining the most attention. But he was not the only high-profile prospect around.
Running back Blake Watson (Denver Broncos) went to the Showboats, who play in Memphis, where he had concluded his collegiate career. Offensive tackle Andrew Coker (Las Vegas Raiders), who was a starter during the TCU Horned Frogs' surprise run to the national title game in the 2022–23 season, will join Hartman at Birmingham.
On the other side of the ball, UCLA linebacker Gabriel Murphy (Minnesota Vikings) went to the San Antonio Brahmas, while Michigan defensive tackle Braiden McGregor (New York Jets) was taken by the DC Defenders.
Sam Hartman has an unlikely fan in Giants GM's grandmother
On the off chance that the Commanders get Sam Hartman back and on the field, one very intriguing person will be cheering him on. And it's not from within the team but rather a rival's.
In a recent episode of Hard Knocks, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen revealed that his grandmother is a huge fan of the quarterback's:
“My grandma loves him. You know, she still lives in South Bend and watches Notre Dame games. And she’s like, ‘What do you think about Hartman, Joe? He is so cute.’ She goes, ‘I may be 93, but I’m not blind.’ I’m like, ‘Oh geez, Grandma.'”
The first Commanders-Giants game will be on September 15, Week 2.
