Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones run a very different kind of operation for the Cowboys as compared to the rest of the league when it comes to personnel. Most teams have a general manager who is responsible for player issues, including who is drafted and how their contracts are structured. The owner leaves that responsibility to a designated member of the executive team.

However, ever since Jerry Jones became the Cowboys owner, he has been the general manager as well as the owner. This dual role has often raised consternation among the Dallas fanbase because they think that he does not have the requisite expertise to compete in the market. They were hopeful, though, that his son, Stephen Jones, who is also the executive vice president of the franchise, would choose a different path if and when he eventually takes over.

However, the younger Jones was non-committal when he was asked about this issue and if he would become the general manager one day. Jon Machota of The Athletic reported that Stephen Jones is most invested in spending more time with his father, as is expected. He said:

"I don't think about that. I want to enjoy every moment with my father. He's the owner and the president and the GM. I cherish every minute that I've gotten to work with my father. A lot of people don't get that opportunity. I cherish the opportunity. I want to be where my feet are. There's that old saying that Dak [Prescott] likes to use: 'Enjoy what you're doing at the moment.'"

The executive vice president of the Cowboys then said that he would worry about these things when the time comes that Jerry Jones is no longer there. He continued:

"We'll cross that road one day. No one's getting out of here alive the last I checked. At some point that may be the case, but we'll worry about those things when they happen. I just want to enjoy working with him and being a part of something special. I know right now we're frustrated with how our team is competing on the field, but overall we've had a hell of a run and think we got a lot left in us."

While Stephen Jones naturally does not want to think about his father's demise, it was clear from reactions on X/Twitter that many fans are not living purely in the present. Their responses made it seem that they think the Cowboys will improve once Jerry Jones is no longer in the picture as the general manager. Here are some of the comments from the social media platform.

Others were critical of him saying that they have had a great run so far because it's been more than two decades since they reached the NFC Championship. Here are some more posts.

"'We've had a hell of a run...' must be talking about because 29 years of ineptitude is their legacy on the field," one fan commented.
"Hell of a run. Almost 30 years without even appearing in an NFC Championship game. Fuck off Stephen," wrote another.

"Remarkable run of banking billions over three decades while the Cowboys underachieve," said one more.

Cowboys fans' ire against Stephen Jones derived from present frustration against Jerry Jones

Jerry Jones has won three championships for the Dallas Cowboys during his tenure and firmly established them as the most valuable franchise in the NFL. However, they have not won the conference championship or the Super Bowl this century, which has left many fans frustrated.

In 2024, after failing for three consecutive years in the playoffs when they were expected to win, they are bungling the regular season. They sit with a 3-3 record behind the Commanders and the Eagles, despite having the highest-paid quarterback in the league. That frustration against the current owner is justifiably manifested against Stephen Jones too, when the latter does not commit to changing course going forward.
