Cowboys owner Jerry Jones fields bizarre question on Trevon Diggs: 'I don't want to demean Tom Cruise'

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke about Trevon Diggs' season-ending injury on Friday. The 80-year-old also acknowledged it would almost be impossible to replace the star cornerback for the remainder of the 2023 NFL campaign.

During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Jones was asked about potentially making a move to replace Diggs. He responded:

“You can't do that. That's just not real. That's like saying, 'I want to be Tom Cruise.' You don't replace these irreplaceable players."

Jones also said that Diggs' injury was a big setback for Dallas:

“No one has the impact he (Diggs) has. The facts are that we do have depth. We don’t have depth with somebody with his unique abilities, but we’ve got depth relative to playing the position."

When will Trevon Diggs return?

Trevon Diggs tore his ACL during a non-contact one-on-one drill at the Cowboys' practice session on Thursday. The team later revealed that the cornerback will miss the remainder of the 2023 season.

Recovery from a torn ACL usually takes 10 to 12 months. Hence, Diggs could return to action by September 2024, around the start of next season.

The Dallas Cowboys picked Diggs in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. He has played 47 games for the team, racking up 173 tackles, 52 pass breakups, 18 interceptions, two forced fumbles, and two touchdowns. The cornerback earned Pro Bowl honors in 2021 and 2022.

Who do the Cowboys turn to to replace Trevon Diggs?

Following Diggs' injury, the Dallas Cowboys are expected to promote DaRon Bland as a first-team regular. The 24-year-old is expected to start alongside Stephon Gilmore for the Week 3 clash against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Sept. 24.

The Cowboys also have the likes of Noah Igbinoghene and Eric Scott Jr. in their squad, while Jourdan Lewis is another option for Mike McCarthy's side.
