With Dak Prescott out of the Dallas Cowboys' Sunday game against their division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, backup quarterback Cooper Rush got his first start of the season.
Rush did not make the most of his start. In fact, he played poorly, putting on one of the worst quarterback performances this season. In Dallas' 34-6 blowout loss to the Eagles, Rush completed 13-of-23 passes for 45 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions.
After some speculation that the Cowboys should start Trey Lance after Rush's poor performance, owner Jerry Jones shut down the idea of starting Lance over Trey this week.
Jones said, via 105.3 The Fan:
"He does give us our best chance ... He was not the Cooper Rush we know. A lot of things went wrong for us out there (Sunday). He can play better than that."
Lance relieved Rush during the final quarter of their embarrassing loss to the Eagles on Sunday. Lance completed 4-of-6 passes for 21 yards and threw an interception.
Jerry Jones confirms that Dak Prescott is out for the remainder of the 2024 season
Dak Prescott suffered a partial avulsion of his right hamstring during last week's game against the Atlanta Falcons. The injury forced him to miss Sunday's game against the Eagles.
After the team explored multiple options for Prescott's recovery, Jerry Jones confirmed this morning that Prescott will undergo surgery on his hamstring. This will force him to miss the rest of the season.
Tom Pelissero posted this on X:
"#Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday on his injured hamstring and is out for the season, owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan.
"It’s Cooper Rush — and maybe Trey Lance — the rest of the way for Dallas, while Dak rehabs for a 2025 return."
The Cowboys were hopeful that Prescott's injury would just keep him sidelined for around 4-6 weeks. As the days went on, there was less and less optimism that Prescott would return to the field this season.
With Dallas at 3-6 and Prescott nursing a serious hamstring injury, it makes sense to shut him down for the remainder of the season.
The Cowboys will face the Houston Texans next on Monday night. Following that, they will face the Washington Commanders, New York Giants, Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philadelphia Eagles and the Commanders a second time to close out their regular season.
