In Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a partial avulsion in his right hamstring, which is expected to keep him sidelined for 4-6 weeks. After mulling options, Prescott would likely miss more than 4-6 weeks with the Cowboys contemplating on putting him on injured reserve.
On Tuesday morning, Dallas fans received a brutal update on Prescott's status. ESPN's Todd Archer was one of many who broke the news that he will miss the remainder of the campaign.
"Jerry Jones said on @1053thefan that Dak Prescott will undergo surgery in New York on Wednesday on the partial avulsion of his hamstring. “His prognosis is wonderful. It just means we’re not going to have him for the rest of the year," Jones said."
Prescott will begin his recovery after Wednesday's surgery, hoping to be back in time for the start of next season.
In September, Prescott signed a four-year contract extension worth $240 million, including $231 million guaranteed and an $80 million signing bonus, and became the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history.
In the eight games this season, Prescott went 3-5 as a starter, completing 64.7% of passes for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He has a passer rating of 86.0, which is the lowest of any season in his career.
With Dak Prescott sidelined, the Dallas Cowboys are committed to Cooper Rush for the remainder of the season
Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles was the first time this season the Dallas Cowboys were without Dak Prescott. Backup QB Cooper Rush started in his place.
In the 34-6 loss, Rush completed 13 of 23 passes for 45 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Despite a disappointing performance, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is committed to starting Rush for the remainder of the campaign.
Trey Lance was inserted late in the game and completed 4 of 6 passes for 21 yards and an interception.
The Cowboys will face the Houston Texans on Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET.
