Did Andy Reid draft Jalen Hurts? Fresh report reveals Eagles GM sought Chiefs HC's advice

Is Andy Reid one of the reasons that the Philadelphia Eagles drafted quarterback Jalen Hurts?

Andy Reid and his Kansas City Chiefs will face his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday evening. Two of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the National Football League will take the field and the world is eagerly awaiting kick-off.

Interestingly, a new report has surfaced that shows that the Chiefs head coach may have been a significant factor in the Eagles drafting quarterback Jalen Hurts.

According to NFL Insider Chris Mortensen, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman asked his former head coach for advice on drafting Hurts. He knew that the Kansas City Chiefs wouldn't be drafting a quarterback since they had their franchise quarterback in Patrick Mahomes.

"Andy Reid had his QB in Patrick Mahomes so Eagles GM Howie Roseman sought his mentor’s counsel on the draft class of 2020 and Jalen Hurts was someone Reid endorsed as promising candidate as insurance for Carson Wentz, who had not finished 3 of 4 seasons due to injury."

Mortensen mentioned that whenever Roseman wants to get advice and it doesn't involve the Kansas City Chiefs, he asks Andy Reid for his opinion. The head coach's success with quarterbacks means his advice is something they value.

“Whenever we make a big decision that does not have an effect on Chiefs, I always pick Reid’s brain and that was a big decision. Andy taught us so much about the psychology of QBs…”

At the time, the Eagles weren't confident with then-quarterback Carson Wentz due to his ongoing issues with injuries. They were looking to draft a qualified, reliable quarterback and that is clearly what they got when they took Jalen Hurts.

Andy Reid fired Eagles HC Nick Sirianni in 2013

While Andy Reid clearly has a connection to the Eagles after coaching the team for 14 seasons, he also has a connection to Philadelphia's head coach. After he was fired by the Philadelphia Eagles, Reid was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs.

When he arrived in Kansas City, he did a review of the current coaching staff and decided to hire his own, which essentially fired everyone already there. One of those members of staff was now-Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni.

Sirianni was first hired by the Kansas City Chiefs as the Offensive Quality Control Coach in 2009. He was then the assistant quarterbacks coach and eventually the wide receivers coach before he was let go in 2013.

He then went on to work for the San Diego Chargers for four seasons before becoming the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts (a position he held from 2018 through 2020).

We will see if Nick Sirianni can get some measure of revenge on Andy Reid in the Super Bowl tonight.
