Garrett Wilson made a one-handed touchdown catch against the Texans on Thursday night, and it immediately invited comparisons to Odell Beckham Jr.'s famous catch from ten years ago against the Cowboys. In Week 9 of the 2024 NFL season, the Jets were trailing against Houston and needed a miracle to save their year, having entered the game with a 2-6 record and bottom of their division.
The New York wideout caught a pass from quarterback Aaron Rodgers in stunning fashion despite close attention from the opposition cornerback. It was one-handed with both feet in the year, and close to where he could have easily gone out of bounds, as it was initially ruled before being overturned on review.
Garrett Wilson's reception was eerily similar to what Odell Beckham Jr. did in 2014 against the Cowboys when he scored a touchdown that was also one-handed, airborne, and with defenders penalized for paying close attention to him. After the game, the Jets wide receiver was asked about the similarities and he was happy to embrace the comparison.
Garrett Wilson paid tribute to the catch by Odell Beckham Jr. and said he was watching the veteran play live on that day. The current New York player also said that since that ball was presumably going out of bounds and he got both feet in, the current Dolphins star's attempt remains better. Saying how he was humbled to even be included in the conversation, the Jets' hero against the Texans said,
“I was watching live. … Odell’s was different. And he got two feet down, the ball was going to land out of bounds, and it’s Odell man, Odell against the Cowboys. That was the one. So, to even come up in that convo, I am blessed, I am honored.”
Spooky similarities between catches by Odell Beckham Jr. and Garrett Wilson
Garrett Wilson caught the pass from Aaron Rodgers on Halloween Night and there are some spooky similarities between his reception and the one Odell Beckham Jr. had a decade ago against the Cowboys.
The games were held at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in both instances. The New York franchises were going up against teams from their own conference, with the visiting organizations based in Texas. The two catches were recorded in the month of November.
One observation that was different, though, was that the Giants lost against the Cowboys in 2014. On the other hand, the Jets won against the Texans and have rekindled their hope for the 2024 NFL season.
