Is Darnell Wright the best tackle in 2023 NFL Draft? Ranking top 3 prospects

NFL Combine
Offensive lineman Darnell Wright of Tennessee

While Darnell Wright had a fabulous NFL Combine and a stellar college career, he's not the best offensive tackle heading into the 2023 NFL draft.

Wright has many stellar characteristics that would make him an asset for most teams in the National Football League. He passed the eye test. At 6' 5″ and 333 pounds, Wright has solid height and weight, with a tremendous frame that stores ample power.

Furthermore, for his size, Wright shows off impressive athleticism. He can promptly snap into position when reacting to opponents. As mentioned earlier, Wright had an awesome NFL Combine, putting up impressive counting stats such as a stellar 5.01 40-yard dash with a rapid 1.81 10-yard split. He also put up a 29″ vertical and a 9’6″ broad jump.

However, Darnell Wright remains a raw prospect ahead of the 2023 NFL draft, and just like his colleagues, he has aspects where he can improve significantly. While Wright has excellent functional mobility for his size, he could be more elite in that department.

Wright can only sometimes retrieve his feet quickly after blocking in space. He also needs to gain elite range, and it can be difficult for him to manage his pad level in space. Considering his massive size, Wright naturally plays too tall occasionally. He can only sometimes sustain blocks with a taller pad level, so NFL defenders could exploit his frame with superior leverage. If he can overcome these shortcomings, he could be an absolute unit at the Pros.

Top three 2023 NFL Draft tackle prospects, ft Darnell Wright

So, if Darnell Wright is not the best tackle prospect ahead of the 2023 NFL draft, who are the prospects ahead of him? Let's take a look.

#1 Paris Johnson Jr. | Ohio State University

Paris Johnson has a rich blend of size, athleticism and power and plenty of starting experience at both tackle spots and likely the guard position.

He was a solid protector for CJ Stroud at Ohio State and could continue his stellar form. Moreover, he has the character to take correction and improve on his weak spots.

#2 Peter Skoronski | Northwestern University

Skoronski's lack of size and length might force him inside to guard at the next level, but he's a polished and pro-ready prospect who can stick at tackle in the right situation.

Peter Skoronski is the best player at Northwestern University, and he's a virtual lock on day one of the 2023 NFL draft.

#3 Darnell Wright | Tennessee State University

Wright has the versatility to play either tackle spot and has as much upside as any likely first-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft. We've already said it all about the potential Pro Bowler. All that's left is for him to prove us right (or wrong).
