The Cowboys ended the last season disappointingly and now Jerry Jones' inability to land Zack Moss is adding insult to that injury. Having lost Tony Pollard to the Tennessee Titans in free agency, one would have hoped that getting a premier running back would be a priority.
But based on the latest reports, Jerry Jones balked at the contract negotiations as he felt that Zack Moss was demanding too much. The player is now said to have signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. The player who he is replacing, Joe Mixon, has decided to come to Texas but will play in Houston instead of Dallas.
All of this was too much for the fans and they took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express their disappointment in the Cowboys owner and general manager. Jerry Jones chose to stick with Dak Prescott and Mike McCarthy despite the humiliation of last season's playoffs when the seventh-seed Green Bay Packers defeated them in the Wild Card round at home. The idea was that they had a fantastic regular season and they needed a final opportunity to prove their worth.
But with Tyron Smith unlikely to return on the offensive line and Tony Pollard also on the way out, it marks a change in key offensive personnel. This comes a year after Ezekiel Elliott also left Dallas and moved to New England.
All of this shows that perhaps the Cowboys owner is putting a steep hurdle for the coach and the quarterback to climb and will only retain them going forward if they can deliver this season. And he believes that last season was the time for them to shine but having blown the opportunity they are not going to get any extra help.
With Dan Quinn also having left the organization, there are wholesale changes afoot. Not signing Zack Moss is unlikely to have been about money for the most valuable franchise in the world. Rather, it shows that Jerry Jones wants to plan for the future now and is uninterested in bringing veterans to aid any tilt for the Super Bowl. He is leaving his quarterback and coach to figure that out all on their own.
