AFC Wild Card Playoffs - Los Angeles Chargers v Jacksonville Jaguars

With the third-largest comeback in NFL playoffs history, the Jacksonville Jaguars stunned the Los Angeles Chargers and the wider NFL world. Down 27-0 in the first half, the Jaguars scored right at the end to go down 27-7 at halftime. They outscored the Chargers 24-3 in the second half to emerge with a 31-30 win.

It sent NFL fans on Twitter wild in disbelief. Much of the hilarity was aimed understandably at the Chargers. There was praise for the Jaguars as well.

Matt Ryan was mentioned as this playoff win was a bigger comeback than his infamous Super Bowl loss. It even saw some mea culpa from people who had declared the game over at half-time.

Does the Jaguars victory over the Chargers make them the clutchest team in the league?

We saw the largest comeback in NFL history when the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Indianapolis Colts earlier this season. The Jacksonville Jaguars, however, are making a habit of coming back from hopeless situations more often than not.

They were 4-8 at one stage and won five straight games to end with a 9-8 record and win the AFC South division. That gave them homefield advantage going into the postseason. But this was not a flash in the pan. Looking back at their last five home games points to a trend.

In each of those games, they have been down by more than one possession every time at one point in the game. In each case, they have come back to win it.

Trevor Lawrence and other players have shown increasing maturity over the last few weeks. It also points to the quality of coaching pverseen by Doug Pederson. The first-year Jaguars coach is an experienced campaigner who has won the Super Bowl.

His hallmarks have always been gutsy calls and making the best of what he has. It was that spirit that helped him get his hands on the Lombardi Trophy with the Philadelphia Eagles. It is a mentality he seems to have brought here as well.

The Chargers, on the other hand, will be left licking their wounds. This is a game they should have won. At one point they could have scored a field goal in the second half. Had they converted, they would have won 33-31, with everything else remaining the same.

Ultimately, it came down to a superior application by the opposing team. This will hurt in Los Angeles for some time to come.
