Elon Musk's tenure as Twitter head has not been the best of times for the social media giant.

From technical problems to disastrous layoffs, and from the restoration of accounts of controversial figures to financial losses, Twitter has been mired in scandal after scandal ever since the Tesla founder bought the platform. And that is not to mention the time he launched Twitter Blue, which allowed users to buy the signature bluecheck verification badge for at least $8 a month or $84 a year.

But now another controversy related to Twitter Blue has emerged: Twitter has just ended legacy verification as of today (midnight Eastern Time). Many famous people and organizations have declared that they will not be paying for Twitter Blue, and Patrick Mahomes is one of them.

The highly-accomplished Kansas City Chiefs quarterback posted this question on Twitter when addressing the situation:

But not everyone was happy:

Millionaires acting like $8 bothers them is corny lol

So this commenter is unhappy at Mahomes' apparent first-world problems, but even with a record-breaking contract, Mahomes may still want to keep the Blue Check to maintain his social media clout.

But there was more mockery to come Mahomes' way:

Still, some have come to his aid:

How much is Patrick Mahomes' current contract?

Before the 2020 season, Patrick Mahomes signed a massive 10-year extension with the Kansas City Chiefs. The contract is worth $477 million plus $26 million in bonuses for a total of $503 million. It is the largest contract in professional sports, even larger than the 12-year extension Trout and the Angels reached in 2019.

For the 2021 season, the Chiefs restructured Mahomes' contract, saving $17 million in cap space. This allowed the team to sign, among others, Super Bowl-winning guard Joe Thuney, shoring up their offensive line, which had been a problem in Super Bowl LV.

In 2022, the Chiefs looked to cut costs further by letting their $42 million safety Tyrann Mathieu leave as a free agent. Their most notable free agent pickup was receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, who got a one-year $10.75 million deal. They won Super Bowl LVII together, then he joined the Patriots for three years and $33 million.

So far, there has not been much change in the Chiefs roster for 2023, but that is to be expected of a team with a highly-successful quarterback who gets paid like one and also has the best tight end in the league and a sturdy offensive line to free him up for his big-time throws.
