The long-awaited return of Deshaun Watson to the NFL begins with his official return to practice with the Cleveland Browns. Watson sat out last year after demanding a trade from the Houston Texans while also dealing with multiple accusations of sexual misconduct and harassment from several women.

The NFL and the NFLPA eventually agreed on an 11-game suspension following an independent arbitrator’s ruling that he behaved inappropriately with the female masseuses.

Many fans feel strongly against Watson’s return to the practice field and planned debut start with the Cleveland Browns:

Other fans took a more conventional route and posted GIFs and memes, or punned the situation:

Of course, Watson has his defenders as well.

Deshaun Watson joins Cleveland Browns as team attempts to turn season around

The 3-6 Browns are not quite out of the playoff race, but the team currently sits third behind the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC North. Four teams are also ahead of the Browns for the final Wildcard playoff spot, so Deshaun Watson’s presence should provide a slim hope for the team’s playoff aspirations.

The defense has not been as stout as in previous seasons, but the running game led by Nick Chubb remains a strength. If Watson can quickly knock off some rust and improve the passing offense, the Browns could conceivably sneak into the playoffs.

Their remaining schedule includes some tough teams like the Buffalo Bills, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and division rivals the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals.

Ironically, Deshaun Watson’s first eligible game to start will be against his former team, the Houston Texans, in Houston, Texas. Other teams remaining on the schedule include the New Orleans Saints, Washington Commanders, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Browns will need to make a significant run in the second half of the season if they are to make the playoffs.

In addition to running back Nick Chubb, Watson will also have offensive weapons in running back Kareem Hunt, wider receivers Amari Cooper and Donovan Peoples-Jones, and tight end David Njoku.

With all the necessary pieces in place on offense, it will be interesting to see how Watson fares in his new home.
