Cooper Rush has been Dak Prescott's backup at the Dallas Cowboys for seven seasons and counting (unless one counts his 2023 preseason stint at the New York Giants' practice squad). But just because he's been with the team for a long time, it doesn't mean he'll become a copy of the starting quarterback.
That was apparent in Sundays' divisional matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, wherein Rush attempted to emulate Prescott's "Here we go!" pre-snap cadence, which led to fans mocking him online.
"Can he not be original?" one wondered.
"Imagine what a tool Cooper Rush feels like having to use that stupid 'here we go' cadence of Dak's," another sneered.
"Find a different cadence," another demanded.
Cowboys players express support for Rush
With Dak Prescott set to end his 2024 season by undergoing surgery on his hamstring, the pressure is on Rush as he looks to elevate the Cowboys from a relatively abysmal 3-5 record entering Sunday's game.
Nevertheless, his teammates have the utmost confidence that he can do it. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb said of Rush:
“We know what Coop can do. The confidence is still there. Just stand in there and deliver.”
Linebacker Micah Parsons added:
“I’ve seen what Cooper Rush can do. That’s a good boy right there... He won games for us by just doing the basics, just playing good football.”
Head coach Mike McCarthy, meanwhile, has a strong comparison in mind - former MVP Rich Gannon.
"I was pretty young watching him, but I remember the Super Bowl with the Raiders I think versus the Bucs. But yeah, a guy that has played forever, was a starter forever, different roles, and played well. It's always nice being compared to that."
The only goal at the moment is defeating the Eagles.
"It's kind of our approach this week, you got to take them one at a time. It's a cliche, but it works, and so that's kind of the goal. You just really take practice by practice, game by game, and we'll see what happens.”
The Cowboys are currently trailing 14-6 at halftime.
