Patrick Mahomes is one of the most successful QBs of this generation, but he isn’t on the list of highest-paid quarterbacks. After Dak Prescott nailed a massive $240 million contract for four years on Sunday, he has become the highest-paid QB in NFL history. However, former Chiefs offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz had a cryptic reaction to it.

On X (formerly Twitter), ESPN’s NFL reporter posted a list of the highest-paid QBs in the league. Mahomes was not on the list, with most of the top earners making north of $50 million per year. This thwarted former Schwartz to share his cryptic take on the post.

“One day people will fully understand the Patrick Mahomes contract. Today is still not that day,” Schwartz posted on X.

Fans debated the meaning behind Schwartz’s message. Several Chiefs fans argued that Mahomes’ contract allows the franchise to build a strong team around him, leading to victories. However, the 2020 Super Bowl winner did not clarify his message.

In 2020, the Kansas City Chiefs and Mahomes signed the largest contract in the history of the NFL, a 10-year deal amounting to $450 million. However, this nets the Chiefs shot caller only $45 million per year, well below Prescott's $60 million.

Stephen A. Smith wants Patrick Mahomes to amend his contract

During the offseason, as multiple QBs signed newer and flashier contracts, sports personality Stephen A. Smith saw the writing on the wall. He insisted that the Chiefs’ long-term deal with Mahomes will make him one of the most underpaid QBs soon enough. On his podcast, Smith said:

“Kansas City Chiefs, get on the phone now. Call Patrick Mahomes’ agent and basically say to him, 'We’re just waiting until the dust settles, then we’ll make sure to make you the highest-paid player in the National Football League.'”
“Let’s get that out of the way right now. Ain’t nobody, nobody, deserves to be paid more than Patrick Mahomes.”

Whether the Chiefs or Mahomes listen to Smith’s advice will shape the future of the franchise and the QB market.
