Recently retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady dropped a bombshell on social media on Sunday night, announcing that he has decided to unretire and return for the 2022 NFL season.

On Twitter, Brady wrote:

"These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands. That time will come. But it’s not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible. I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa. Unfinished business LFG"

Brady will return for his third season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and his 23rd overall.

Tom Brady's sensational u-turn

Brady announced his retirement following the Buccaneers' narrow loss against eventual Super Bowl champions Los Angeles in the divisional round of the 2021 playoffs. Despite being 44 at the time, many believed Brady was walking away in his prime.

The veteran quarterback threw for a league-leading 5,316 passing yards and 43 touchdown passes. Brady set career-highs in passing yards and pass attempts during the 2021 season, and his touchdown pass tally was the second-highest of his career. He finished second in the MVP voting, behind Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers.

Brady was rumored to be unretiring almost immediately after announcing that he would be walking away from the sport after 22 seasons. Many speculated that the seven-time Super Bowl champion would return and demand a trade to the San Francisco 49ers, his boyhood team.

Brady's tweet suggests he will be suiting up for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2022 NFL season. The 49ers rumors will die down as it's unlikely that the Buccaneers would even entertain the possibility of a trade or Brady would demand one, given that he explicitly mentioned that he loves his teammates in Tampa in his Twitter post.

Brady has one more year left on his current deal with the Buccaneers, meaning this could be the legendary quarterback's rendition of "Last Dance." It's been a crazy week in the NFL on the quarterback front, with Rodgers committing his future to the Packers, Russell Wilson joining the Denver Broncos, and Deshaun Watson escaping potential criminal charges and rocketing to the top of every quarterback-needy team's wishlist.

But right on cue, before the week drew to a close, Tom Brady usurped them all with his bombshell announcement.
