Donald Trump chose to attend the Steelers versus Jets game at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh as the US Presidential campaign reaches a crescendo. With less than a month to go until the country elects its 47th President, the race between the 45th and the incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris is in a dead heat.
The election will come down to swing states and Pennsylvania is among them. With both candidates needing as many votes as they can, it was not a surprise to see Donald Trump choose an NFL game to make his appearance.
The former president waved to the crowd from a box, who in turn acknowledged him with chants of U-S-A.
Donald Trump did not limit his engagement to an in-person appearance. He also posted a photo on Instagram wearing a Steelers jersey.
Donald Trump collects cheers as Russell Wilson gets booed at Acrisure Stadium by Steelers fans vs Jets
As Donald Trump basked in the love shown to him by the fans, Russell Wilson was feeling a different kind of vibe on the field. He made his first appearance of the season and took over from Justin Field. But as the Jets built up a first-half lead, he struggled to lead the Steelers' offense on big drives. That caused the Pittsburgh faithful to boo him.
The 45th president could have afforded himself a wry smile at the situation since the former Seahawks player was less than happy with Donald Trump when he was last in office. Russell Wilson had spoken out vociferously against what the former Commander-in-Chief was doing, especially concerning immigration. He had said,
“Despite anybody’s political issues or views, everybody has a right to choose who they want to vote for. But this thing’s getting out of hand. It’s getting out of hand, people."
Russell Wilson had emphasized the need for equality, something that then-President Trump was not upholding in his policies and rhetoric, according to the quarterback, adding,
"All the protests that have gone on through the African-American community, through obviously the Muslim community too, if we’re going to be a nation that says we’re equal, we have to be equal -- obviously being smart, all that kind of stuff... Just because you believe in something or you’re from a certain place doesn’t mean that you’re a bad person."
But against the Jets, it was the current presidential candidate feeling the love and not so much the Steelers quarterback.
