The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baltimore Ravens faced off on Monday Night Football in Week 7 of the 2024 NFL season and Chris Godwin was carted off with a scary injury toward the end of the game.
With just about a minute remaining, Baker Mayfield threw a pass to Chris Godwin. The wide receiver was tackled by Roquan Smith when he tried to go up and pick up the first down and some extra yards. Smith appeared to land awkwardly on the Buccaneers player's lower left leg.
ESPN/ABC declined to show a replay on broadcast, but on first look, it seemed like he was dragging the injured leg and his left foot was not at the correct angle compared to his right and the ground.
He was carted off in some pain and got a hug from Baker Mayfield as the rest of the stadium chanted his name. He did not return to the game with just seconds remaining but the bigger question is how long he will be out for now.
After the game head coach Todd Bowles revealed that the wide receiver had dislocated his left ankle. That is likely to rule him out for the rest of the season. It might also be the last time the Buccaneers faithful get to see Chris Godwin play for them as he is a free agent in 2025.
Buccaneers lose Chris Godwin and Mike Evans in 41-31 MNF loss to Ravens
The Ravens dominated on offense and harassed Mayfield on defense to come out with a 41-31 win on Monday Night Football. But the loss for the Buccaneers was made worse by injuries.
Godwin's injury occurred at a time when the game seemed gone with just about a minute remaining and Tampa Bay trailing 41-31.
It was not just that Godwin got seriously injured when the most prudent course of action would have been to run out the clock. It is also that they lost Mike Evans, their other top wide receiver, to a hamstring injury in the first half.
Evans was on the injury report coming into this game and was seen limping after scoring his first touchdown. It remains to be seen how long he will be out.
