ABOUT

Baker Mayfield is a quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams in the National Football League(NFL) right now. After being selected overall first in the 2018 NFL Draft, he began his NFL career as a quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. The quarterback's performance for the Browns has been spotty, and he hasn't lived up to expectations after being selected first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Baker Mayfield, however, is one of the most well-known faces in advertising due to his numerous endorsement contracts and appearances in popular ads. Mayfield is one of the highest-paid players in the National Football League (NFL). Cleveland back in 2018 had captured his signatures in a $32.68 million contract. In 2022, the Carolina Panthers acquired Mayfield in a trade. He was released by the Panthers at the end of the season due to his uneven play and injuries, and the Rams subsequently acquired him off waivers.

Baker Mayfield’s Early Life and Background

Baker Mayfield, was born on April 14, 1995 in Austin, Texas to Gina and James Mayfield. He is their second son. Playing as a quarterback from a young age, Baker helped the Lake Travis High School Cavaliers win the 2011 4A State Championship and compile a 25-2 record in two seasons. He had 6,255 throwing yards, 67 touchdown passes, and eight interceptions at the end of his high school football career. He was also a three-star prospect.

Although he was given several scholarship offers, he chose to pursue college football at Texas Tech University.

Baker Mayfield became the first walk-on true freshman quarterback to start an FBS season opening in 2013 when he was selected the Red Raiders' starting quarterback.

With 413 passing yards and four touchdowns in his debut game, Baker earned the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week award. He accumulated 2,315 throwing yards and 12 touchdowns during the season, but he departed the team due to a breakdown in communication with the coaching staff.

Baker Mayfield was due to play for the Oklahoma Sooners after transferring to the University of Oklahoma. Due to Big 12 transfer regulations, he missed a year of eligibility, but Baker won the starting position the following year.

For the 2015 season, Mayfield helped lead the Sooners to the Orange Bowl where they fell to Clemson 37-17. The Sooners defeated Auburn 35-19 in the Sugar Bowl the following season, and Mayfield was named MVP. In 2017, Mayfield helped Oklahoma defeat TCU Horned Frogs 41-17 to win their third consecutive Big 12 title. Baker Mayfield Draft

Baker Mayfield entered the 2018 NFL Draft as one of the top prospects. In the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns picked Baker Mayfield as the first overall choice.

On July 24, 2018, Mayfield agreed to a four-year rookie contract with the Browns, with a guaranteed salary of $32.68 million.

Baker Mayfield’s NFL Journey

After being drafted by the Cleveland Browns, he had to wait till Week 3 of the 2018 NFL season to make his start. In Week 3's game against the New York Jets, he made his first start of the year, filling in for an injured Tyrod Taylor and helping the club come back from a 14-0 hole to win 21-17. From that point on, Baker took over as the club's starting quarterback and helped them to a 7-8-1 record after taking over for a squad that had gone 1-31 over the previous two seasons.

Despite not even playing the full year, his rookie season saw him shatter the record for touchdown passes thrown by a rookie, surpassing Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson with 27 touchdown passes.

The Cleveland Browns saw a number of coaching and offensive coordinator changes throughout the following several years. However, Baker Mayfield had his greatest season in 2020, tossing for 4,030 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions, as well as a playoff victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card Round and a defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round.

The Browns chose to exercise Mayfield's $18.9 million guaranteed fifth-year contract option for the 2022 season. Although the Browns missed the playoffs in a weak year, Baker continued to play despite having a partly torn labrum. After throwing an interception and attempting to make a tackle, Mayfield got injured. He played for the most of the season with a harness on his shoulder, and later on, the same shoulder had a broken humerus bone. In order to have surgery, Mayfield withdrew from the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Cleveland Browns opted to get DeShaun Watson through a trade over the offseason, and Mayfield put in a trade request from the Browns. On July 6, 2022, Baker Mayfield was exchanged for a conditional 2024 fifth-round selection and traded to the Carolina Panthers.

At Carolina Panthers, Mayfield competed for the starting spot with Sam Darnold. Although Mayfield was decided to be the starter for the 2022 NFL season he suffered an ankle sprain in Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers. He returned in action in Week 8 of the season but Mayfield soon requested a release from the Panthers which was granted to him. He was claimed by the Los Angeles Rams one day after being released by the Carolina Panthers.

With the help of his outstanding efforts, the Browns finished 2020 with an 11-5 record, made the playoffs for the first time since 2002, and won the playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which was their first playoff victory since 1994.

In his first three seasons with the Browns, Mayfield had been outstanding personally. In 2020, Baker threw for 3,563 yards and 26 touchdowns against 8 interceptions, according to Pro Football Reference. His performance suffered a setback in his fourth season, though. With 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions, Baker finished the 2021 season with a 6-8 record.

Carolina Panthers (2022)

Mayfield joined the Carolina Panthers in 2022 in a trade where the Browns received a conditional fifth round draft pick in 2024. His tenure with the Carolina Panthers only lasted a few months. He started in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season against his former side, Cleveland Browns. Despite a late comeback, Mayfield lost the game 26-24 to the Browns after throwing for 235 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Mayfield missed the next week's game against the Los Angeles Rams after suffering a high ankle sprain in the Panthers' Week 5 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers. For Weeks 8 and 9, Mayfield came back and backed up P. J. Walker. Mayfield began the second half of the 42-21 loss after the Panthers were thrashed 35-0 by the Cincinnati Bengals, throwing for 155 yards and two touchdowns. He requested for release in December 2022, and it was granted on December 5, 2022.

Los Angeles Rams (2022-Present)

Mayfield was taken off waivers by the Los Angeles Rams on December 6, 2022, who will pay out the remaining $1.35 million of his contract. With 1:45 left in the game and no timeouts, he led the Rams on the longest touchdown drive of his career, a 98-yard drive that won the game for the Rams. Mayfield threw his 100th career throwing touchdown in a Monday Night Football game against the Green Bay Packers during Week 15 of the season.
