The first casualty of the XFL game between the DC Defenders and the Vegas Vipers was former Packers player Cody Conway. He left the field with an ankle injury in the first quarter after a brutal fall. The conditions of the field were not ideal and he seemed to have twisted his ankle. He could not put any weight on his leg as he left the field.

He was in the tent for some time after the injury. However, he could not recover and he needed the assistance of the mobile cart to take him away. It is tough luck for the starting left tackle of the DC Defenders, who would have hoped to impress enough people in the XFL to find a place back into the NFL.

Cody Conway's football history

Cody Conway played college football for Syracuse but was an undrafted free agent in 2019. He was signed by the Tennessee Titans but was terminated. He then moved into the practice squad with the Green Bay Packers, but did not play in 2019. He returned to the team as a street-free agent in 2020 but was terminated.

That allowed him to join the practice squad with the San Francisco 49ers, but that stint did not lead to a regular-season game in the NFL either. He was picked in 2021 as a street-free agent in 2021 by the Denver Broncos but his contract was terminated.

Signing with the DC Defenders in the XFL represented an opportunity for him to impress NFL scouts and also re-establish his professional football career. He is always expected to be a starter when fit. The DC Defenders selected two centers, two guards, and five offensive tackles, and Cody Conway had the highest NFL experience among all of the selections.

This could have been a great opportunity for Cody Conway to establish himself. As a player with Syracuse, he played regularly with them from 2015 to 2018. In his final two seasons, he recorded more than 30 knockdown blocks each season.

He played nearly 3000 snaps at left tackle. He earned All-ECAC honors twice, including first-team recognition in 2017, and became the second player in school history to be named to the All-ACC Academic Team three times, after being honored every season from 2016 to 2018.

Instead, he will now have to await a diagnosis of how severe his injury is to see how soon he can make it back to the XFL and result with the DC Defenders again.
