Jauan Jennings is a beloved member of the San Francisco 49ers roster, and many fans appreciate his contributions as a backup wide receiver — especially on third downs. However, it could have all gone to nothing, as the now-outlawed hip-drop tackle still appeared in a game.

Jennings took a high midway through the third quarter from New York Jets cornerback Michael Carter II and had to leave the game momentarily due to an ankle injury. The league banned the hip-drop tackle in 2024 due to the amount of injuries the technique causes.

Still, not all was lost for the wide receiver, as he returned later in the third quarter. It felt more scary than anything, but it's still worth noticing because it happened in a banned play — and Carter did not get a penalty for that.

How much is Jauan Jennings earning with the 49ers?

The San Francisco 49ers extended wide receiver Jauan Jennings' contract for two years and $15,4 million in May. He was a restricted free agent who was retained by the team, and the extension now clears his way to play in 2024 free of any concerns.

He's a popular member of the roster with the fans, and plenty of them are happy with the new deal. He has become a fan favorite for his contributions on third downs that became notable throughout the 2023 season. Before the injury, he made some good plays against the Jets as well.

Most of the 49ers' receiving group got new deals this offseason, and Jennings was not even close to the most important one. It's just that the Brandon Aiyuk saga wasn't the best for the team or the player, and it became a huge distraction before he signed an extension one week before the kickoff.

Jennings' importance is also huge in this group, as first-round wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot before the start of the season and will miss at least the first four games. Deebo Samuel and Aiyuk will still carry the majority of the load.
