The San Francisco 49ers are used to making bold trades. In the 2021 NFL Draft, the NFC West franchise selected quarterback Trey Lance as the overall third pick in the first round.

The Niners, however, used three first-rounders and a third-round pick to acquire Lance. Three of the four picks San Francisco used for Lance have already been used.

Last year, the Niners' No. 12 pick was used by the Dallas Cowboys via a trade to draft LB Micah Parsons. The latter player eventually went on to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

In the 2022 NFL draft, San Francisco gave up two more of their picks — numbers 29 and 102. The No. 29 pick was used by the New England Patriots to take center Cole Strange. The Miami Dolphins held on to the No. 102 pick and selected Georgia LB Channing Tindall.

The only remaining pick from the Lance trade is the Niners’ first-round pick next year. The pick from the 2023 NFL draft is yet to be determined.

Why did the San Francisco 49ers trade Trey Lance?

Trading Trey Lance signaled that the Niners were set to place their faith in the highly-rated quarterback. It also marked the occasion when San Francisco selected a quarterback in the first round since Alex Smith in 2005.

Lance signed a four-year rookie contract, worth $34.1 million, in July 2021. It became apparent that San Francisco was ready to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo.

In his first season with the Niners, Lance threw for 603 passing yards and racked up six touchdowns in six appearances.

Prior to the 2022 NFL season, the Niners revealed that Lance will be their starting quarterback ahead of Garoppolo. However, the 22-year-old suffered an ankle injury in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks that cut short his season.
