Titans rookie QB Cam Ward honors father, Calvin

Cam Ward, who was the No. 1 selection in April, spent part of Father’s Day weekend celebrating the man behind his journey to the league: his father, Calvin Ward.
In a feature published by ESPN on Sunday, Ward reflected on Calvin’s relentless commitment during his path from overlooked high school talent to NFL starter. Ward recalled how his father used to wake up before dawn to drive him across Texas for football camps. This included one 12-hour round trip to East Texas Baptist University that started at 3 a.m.
Despite playing in a run-first offense in high school, Ward managed over 2,200 passing yards on just 267 completions. He received little recruiting attention, but Calvin refused to give up. He emailed countless college coaches in search of a shot for his son.
Their breakthrough came at a satellite camp for the University of the Incarnate Word, where then-offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich shut down the session to keep Ward under the radar. Ward’s eventual rise included stops at Washington State and Miami, where Calvin attended all 57 games, according to ESPN.
The heartfelt tribute came just hours before Ward delivered a 50-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Ridley during the Titans' mandatory minicamp. The performance caught the attention of Sports Illustrated, which reported on Sunday that Ridley praised Ward’s poise and instinct.
Ward, signed to a $48.7 million rookie deal, looks to be Tennessee’s long-term answer at quarterback.
