Who owns the Pittsburgh Steelers? All you need to know about history of Rooney family’s stewardship

The Pittsburgh Steelers are owned by Art Rooney II

The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently owned by the Rooney family, namely Art Rooney II. That is unlikely to change in the near future as the Rooney family is widely considered among the best owners in all sports.

They are involved in the game and treat their employees and players with the utmost respect. They are the driving force behind the Steelers being one of the best franchises in the NFL.

Current owners of the Steelers in the wake of John Rooney’s death

One of the minority owners, John Rooney, recently passed away. He was the son of Art, who currently owns the team. He was one of five Rooney children and was also a minority shareholder.

He leaves the rest of his family to own the team, though he had sold most of what was a 16% share of the team by the time he passed away. Since he only owned 1% of the team at the time of death, the ownership isn't likely to change very much.

John was the youngest son in the family. His death came very shortly after the franchise lost iconic running back Franco Harris before Christmas.

Are the Steelers and the Giants owned by the same family?

The New York Giants are owned by John Mara and Steve Tisch. Since the Rooney's own the Pittsburgh Steelers, these are two separate families.

However, the Mara sisters are the great-granddaughters of Giants founder Tim Mara and Steelers founder Art Rooney. They do not share the same last name, but the same very extended family is in ownership of both franchises at this time.

Pittsburgh Steelers’ current market value

Surprisingly enough, the Pittsburgh Steelers aren't one of the most valuable franchises in the NFL.

That honor would belong to the Dallas Cowboys ($8 billion), the New England Patriots ($6.4 billion), the Los Angeles Rams ($6.2 billion), the Giants ($6 billion), the Chicago Bears ($5.8 billion) and the potentially for-sale Washington Commanders ($5.6 billion).

The Steelers are currently valued at $4 billion, however, so they're not a worthless franchise by any means.
