Why did Dolphins release D.J. Fluker? Looking back at OL’s career ahead of Pro Day comeback attempt

D.J. Fluker is a former offensive tackle who was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the first round of the 2013 Draft at pick number 11. He was one of the best tackles coming out of Alabama in 2011, but had a rather disappointing career for his hype.

He played in the NFL from 2013-2020 while being on three practice squads in 2021.

On April 20, 2021, the Miami Dolphins signed Fluker to a one-year, $1.075 million deal. None of the money was guaranteed. He started training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list. Ahead of the start of training camp, he was placed on the IR list. He'd undergone mensicus surgery, and this prevented him from competing for a spot on the Dolphins' offensive line. Four days after being placed on injured reserve, he was released from the team.

Fast forward two years, and the former first-round pick is looking to make an NFL comeback. Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Fluker will workout today at the Alabama Pro Day to showcase his skills in hopes of a team signing him.

Fluker has cut down recently to 330 pounds and looks much more shredded than he did when he was in the NFL.

D.J. Fluker spent the first four seasons of his career (from 2013-2016) with the Chargers before being released by the team on March 7, 2017. He signed with the New York Giants the following season and played in nine games while starting six. He suffered a toe injury in Week 11 and was placed on injured reserve.

The following season, he joined the Seattle Seahawks and started in nine games as their offensive guard. He got a two-year extension in the off-season but was released on April 27, 2020.

Fluker last played with the Baltimore Ravens in 2020 before being placed on the COVID-19 list midway through the season. The following season, he was picked up by the Miami Dolphins but was released due to a torn meniscus.

Fluker was then signed to the Raiders' practice squad but was released on December 2. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed him to their practice squad on December 31, 2021, but he was released three days later. That was the last time he was on an NFL roster.

While D.J. Fluker has the experience and looks to be in football shape, will a team give him a shot at playing in 2023?
