NFL Draft 2024: 3 NFL teams that failed to address major roster holes

The NFL Draft 2024 is now over and the teams are set for the upcoming season with some small tweaks probable. But barring any major changes, we can begin comparing the teams and how they are set for the new league year.

Every franchise entered the draft hoping to strengthen themselves. We know that when we look back a few years from now, not all the players selected in this draft will deliver on their promise. But, at the moment, some organizations will feel better about themselves, for the way they worked the NFL Draft 2024, than others.

Here is a list of three such clubs that still have rosters that show significant weakness going into the 2024 NFL season.

Teams that still have weaknesses after NFL Draft 2024

#1 - Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys were let down by the free agency and did not find all the solutions after the NFL Draft 2024. They lost left tackle Tyron Smith, running back Tony Pollard, center Tyler Biadasz, defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, cornerback Stephon Gilmore, linebacker Leighton Vander Esch and receiver Michael Gallup.

In the draft, they picked up Tyler Guyton in the first round to replace Smith but then did not replace any of the others right away. They took an edge rusher and a guard before going with a cornerback later. While the players themselves should not be criticized, it remains to be seen if they can plug all the holes on the roster.

We do not expect that to happen. Add to it the requirement of another wide receiver to help Dak Prescott, and we can say that the Cowboys did not do justice to themselves in this year's draft. Especially with big contracts coming up for CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons, not to mention their quarterback, this was one draft they should have got right.

#2 - Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders needed a quarterback and saw Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix taken off the board before they went up. So they went and drafted Brock Bowers instead. The Georgia prospect is indeed generational but they have Michael Mayer at the same position whom they picked in the last draft. They compounded the error of missing out on a quarterback with a redundant pick.

They then got the guard and the offensive tackle they needed on the second day of the draft and strengthened their defense with a corner and linebacker. But if they really wanted to answer all the questions surrounding their roster, they could have picked Spencer Rattler later in the NFL Draft 2024, picked a wide receiver in the second round, and covered other positions differently.

Antonio Pierce has his work cut out competing in a division with the dynastic Kansas City Chiefs, the Los Angeles Chargers led by new coach Jim Harbaugh, and the Denver Broncos who are feeling positive about their new quarterback Bo Nix. They needed to have a better draft than they had this year.

#3 - Atlanta Falcons

The reason the Las Vegas Raiders missed out on one of the quarterbacks taken with the top six picks is because the Atlanta Falcons inexplicably took Michael Penix Jr. in the first round. They acquired Kirk Cousins in a trade during the offseason, gave him a deal, and then drafted a 24-year-old rookie to back him up.

That threw their whole NFL Draft 2024 strategy off whack. They needed an edge and a cornerback and did not get either during the top two rounds. They got three defensive tackles over the entire three days and got help for their quarterback with a wide receiver in the sixth round.

It was a mess of a draft for them and even their owner looked unhappy with their general manager at one stage. Kirk Cousins has gone out into the open saying he was blindsided by Michael Penix Jr being picked. Overall, this has now left them with an unbalanced squad going into 2024.
