NFL teams that need a running back: Should Russell Wilson's Broncos swing Derrick Henry trade?

The NFL off-season is in full swing and teams are scrambling to assemble rosters that can compete for the biggest honors in 2023. NFL teams need to pay attention to the running back position, a vital but severely underrated part of the offense.

Elite running backs can win you playoff games, while mediocre backfield players can make your efforts end in futility.

So here, we will look at three NFL teams that need a running back as soon as possible

#1 Denver Broncos

Let Russ cook, let Russ cook; how will Russ cook without having an elite running back to hand the ball to when in doubt?

The running back position is one of the few weak spots the Denver Broncos need to work on before the 2023 NFL season. Yes, the Broncos have guys like Javonte Williams, Chase Edmonds, Damarea Crockett, and Tyler Badie on their roster. But truthfully, are any of these guys of Pro Bowl caliber? Certainly not, and that's why the Broncos should be active in the off-season.

The Broncos could select a young running back like Zach Charbonnet or Devon Achane in the 2023 NFL Draft. Then again, they could dip into free agency and try their luck for a decent and experienced backfield threat with Leonard Fournette (free agent) and Derrick Henry (available via trade) up for grabs.

#2. Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have been cooking this off-season, with Mike McDaniel's team adding Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey to an already stacked defense. However, for all of their cooking, the team still has a major hole to fill at the running back position. The Dolphins do not have a running back under contract, which could be a better look for the side.

The Dolphins are one of the favorites to make a deep playoff run in 2023, so they could be a premium destination for a ring-chasing running back.

Derrick Henry, Austin Ekeler, and Josh Jacobs could be solid veteran additions to their all-star locker room if the Raiders agree to do business.

#3. New Orleans Saints

It feels strange to put a team with Alvin Kamara on this list, but truth be told, the New Orleans Saints aren't your typical NFL franchise. The site is currently in cap space purgatory, and their best running back has a pending criminal case that isn't looking so promising.

As such, they can't rely on Kamara or either Eno Benjamin or Dwayne Washington to fill in his shoes. These players are too injury-prone, so the Saints could do with insurance from a different prospect.

The Saints' best berth is to use their 29th pick in this year's draft to select an elite running back. Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, or Zach Charbonnet could be available, and either could end up as a star. The team can even start planning for life without Alvin Kamara if they play their cards right.
