Jordan Mason got off to a hot start to the 2024 fantasy football season for the San Francisco 49ers. He finished among the top eight weekly running backs in three of his first four games, exceeding 100 yards and scoring a touchdown in all three of them. He has cooled off considerably since then, finishing outside of the top 30 weekly running backs in each of his past four games.
It will be extremely difficult for Mason to bounce back in fantasy football going forward with Christian McCaffrey expected to make his return to the lineup in Week 10. This has made him a potential drop candidate from fantasy rosters this week with his role likely to significantly increase.
Should you drop Jordan Mason for Week 10 fantasy football?
Jordan Mason served as a direct replacement for Christian McCaffrey after he surprisingly opened the 2024 season by missing each of the 49ers' first eight games. He was excellent in his first four but severely regressed in the next four. His fantasy value will take another major hit whenever McCaffrey returns, which is likely to be for their Week 10 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
With his role expected to diminish going forward, it makes sense to drop Mason from fantasy rosters at this point in the season. He will become nothing more than a solid handcuff running back option for as long as McCaffrey remains healthy. Mason can give fantasy managers injury insurance as a bench stash, but fantasy value will likely be hard for him to come by in his new situation.
Jordan Mason's fantasy outlook for the rest of the 2024 season
Christian McCaffrey has been one of the most dominant fantasy football players during his NFL career. In each of the past four seasons where he has played in at least ten games, he has finished the year ranked among the top three running backs. He has also consistently played in more than 75% of the weekly offensive snaps during his time with the 49ers.
The superstar's return from injury basically destroys Mason's fantasy outlook for the remainder of the 2024 season. In his similar RB2 role behind McCaffrey last season, Mason finished inside of the top 50 weekly running backs just three times. For as long as McCaffrey can stay healthy, Mason is no longer a legitimate option to use in weekly fantasy football lineups.
