The New York Jets need a major upgrade at the quarterback position, and acquiring Derek Carr could be the perfect solution.
For the final two games of this season, Carr was surprisingly benched by the Las Vegas Raiders in favor of Jarrett Stidham. The move instantly fueled speculation that Carr’s days as a Raider were numbered. Then a few weeks ago, he posted an emotional farewell message to the fans.
So obviously, the three-time Pro Bowler will be on the move, and the Jets certainly make sense as a landing spot.
The New York Jets have started three quarterbacks this season: Zach Wilson, Mike White and Joe Flacco, and none of those players are long-term answers. Wilson, who was selected by the team second overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, has looked like a bust thus far. White and Flacco aren’t exactly Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady, either.
Derek Carr could become the New York Jets’ best quarterback since Joe Namath
Jets history isn’t jam-packed with elite, larger-than-life quarterbacks. Over the years, we’ve seen a few decent players in the QB position, like Ken O’Brien, Vinny Testaverde and Chad Pennington. Brett Favre played one season with the team as well.
Joe Namath, however, is the franchise’s greatest QB of all time. The Hall of Famer played 12 years in New York and is well-known for leading the underdog Jets to a Super Bowl III victory over the Baltimore Colts.
Although he hasn't played for the Jets since 1976, "Broadway Joe" is still the team's all-time leader in passing yards (27,057) and touchdown passes (170).
The Jets haven't had a passer throw for over 4,000 yards since Namath accomplished the feat way back in 1967. Meanwhile, Carr hit the 4,000 mark four straight times from 2018 to 2021. He would have probably done the same this season if he wasn't benched for the final two contests.
Should the New York Jets go out and pick up Derek Carr this offseason?
Without a doubt, the Jets need to call the Raiders and make a deal for Derek Carr as soon as possible.
New York finished just 7-10 this season and missed the playoffs for the 12th year in a row. But with the possible addition of Carr to the roster, the team could very well earn a playoff berth next season.
Carr would be surrounded by a few offensive weapons in New York, like wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall, who probably would've won Rookie of the Year this year if he hadn't suffered a season-ending torn ACL.
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson recently said he would spend money on a veteran quarterback. Derek Carr should be that veteran quarterback.
