Warren Moon is one of the most underrated quarterbacks in NFL history. He understands the position better than most. Moreover, Moon is familiar with Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson. While Wilson was with the Seattle Seahawks for 10 seasons, Moon was the team's radio analyst until 2017. The Hall of Fame quarterback recently commented on Wilson and said the Broncos star is too stubborn to be a pocket quarterback in the NFL.
Moon said:
“(Seattle) wanted to have him in the pocket about 60 percent of the time and then move him around the rest. All that stuff about, ‘Let Russ cook’ is really him talking about wanting to be in the pocket all the time. He can’t do that. He’s too short. You have to get him out in space a lot of the time so he can see everything.”
Moon noted that the Broncos will have to get the quarterback moving out of the pocket to be more successful.
Moon added:
“You have to get Russ moving around so that he can get out into space so he can see things better. You know from watching, He’s not going to be able to see the middle of the field. When you watch him throw deep, it’s rarely deep down the middle. He also doesn’t see it very well and now that he doesn’t move as well as he used to, he doesn’t like going.”
This season with the Broncos, Russell Wilson has thrown for 2,558 yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions. Wilson is on pace to throw for the fewest touchdowns of his NFL career.
The fewest touchdowns he's thrown in a season were 20 back in the 2014 - 2015 season. As for Moon, he's had one of the best careers of any quarterback in NFL history.
Warren Moon's Hall of Fame NFL career
Moon started his football career in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Edmonton Eskimos. After six seasons in the CFL, Warren Moon joined the NFL with the Houston Oilers. In 10 seasons with the Oilers, he threw for a total of 33,685 yards, 196 touchdowns, and 166 interceptions. The former Washington Huskies star led the NFL in both passing yards and interceptions twice with the Oilers.
He spent three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings after leaving Houston, then played two seasons each with the Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs. Overall, Warren Moon played 17 seasons in the NFL. He threw for 49,325 yards, 291 touchdowns, and 233 interceptions in his career. Warren Moon became the first Black quarterback ever to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
