People are wishing for the best and seeking explanations in the wake of Damar Hamlin's on-field collapse.

On Tuesday morning, the Buffalo Bills tweeted that Hamlin, currently in a critical state, had a cardiac arrest following a collision. The safety has been in intensive care ever since. The good news is that Hamlin has regained consciousness and is responsive. His road to recovery is ongoing, however, the signs are positive.

The second-year safety's lungs are still healing, the Bills said in a tweet on January 5.

Cardiologists proposed that a rare occurrence known as 'commotio cordis' was responsible for Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest. It is important to note that numerous plausible explanations exist.

Dr Hari Tandri, the director of the cardiac arrhythmia department at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, noted that in such circumstances, "there is nothing wrong with the heart." Tandri said that a normal heart, when struck bluntly, can launch into an abnormally deadly rhythm.

Instances of commotio cordis are uncommon. There have been just 200 confirmed instances in the US since 1995. The Korey Stringer Institute at the University of Connecticut reports that sports participants between the ages of eight and 18 are more likely to exhibit commotio cordis.

Commotio cordis is frequently deadly, but fortunately Hamlin received quick treatment. Because young people without a history of heart disease are more likely to experience this type of problem, there are often long-lasting side effects.

People with commotio cordis occasionally lose consciousness, as in Damar Hamlin's case. Twenty per cent of people affected might even chat for a short while before passing out.

What happened to Damar Hamlin?

After a routine tackle on Tee Higgins, 24-year-old Damar Hamlin collapsed and needed immediate medical care on the field. After standing up from the collision, Hamlin fell to the floor.

The league ultimately called off the game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals, which was lauded as the right thing to do. On the pitch, Hamlin received CPR before being taken to the hospital.

His uncle, Dorrian Glenn, revealed to CNN that Hamlin had been put under anesthesia, was on a ventilator, and suffered lung problems. There was a lot of concern for Hamar's health and his positive signs of recovery have been met with widespread joy and relief.
