The Manning Award is one of the most prestigious awards in college football. It is named after Archie Manning and his sons, Peyton and Eli. The award is presented annually to the best quarterback in college football.

Presented by the Sugar Bowl Committee, the award was first introduced in 2004. It has since become one of the most coveted awards in college football. The award is unique in that it takes into consideration the entire season's performance of a quarterback, which includes postseason bowl performances.

The Selection Process

The award has gained credibility over the years due to the selection process. It involves voting by a panel of national media, former college quarterbacks, and Archie Manning himself. Its rigorous selection procedure has ensured the rightful winners since its inception.

The committee is tasked with carefully watching quarterbacks' performances across the season and analyzing their statistics to determine the winner.

The honor goes beyond recognizing individual athletic accomplishments. It also considers qualities such as leadership and sportsmanship. The recipient of this award is not only an outstanding athlete but also serves as a positive representative of the sport.

The award has been won by some of the most talented quarterbacks in college football history. These include top NFL stars like Cam Newton, Deshaun Watson, Joe Burrow, Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Mac Jones, and Jameis Winston.

Many of these players went on to have successful careers in the NFL, proving that the honor is a good predictor of future success on the professional stage. A number of them also clinched the Heisman Trophy the same year they won the Manning award.

Matt Leinart became the first winner of the award in 2004 during his days at USC. So far, Deshaun Watson is the only player to have won the award more than once. The Clemson Tigers alum won the honor during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

All of the recipients of this award, except for Colt McCoy, who received it after the 2009 season, have been chosen in the first round of the NFL Draft. McCoy, on the other hand, was a third-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2010 draft.
