Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network announced on Tuesday (March 28) that players will be able to wear a No. 0 on their shirts, thanks to an approved Philadelphia Eagles request.

Pelissero shared a picture of the change in rules that were presented at the NFL Owner's conference in 2023. No. 0 can now be worn by any player, excluding offensive and defensive linemen. Pelissero reaffirmed that the regulation modification likewise covers punters and placekickers.

Quarterback Johnny Clement, running back Johnny Olszewski and safety Obert Logan have all worn the No. 0 jersey in the NFL. One current player has seized the opportunity to hold the number zero. Calvin Ridley, a new wide receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars, declared that he would wear the jersey on the field for the first time in team history.

The newly accepted wearable numbers for NFL players are listed below each position, with extra numbers being made accessible for kickers and punters under the new rule:

Quarterbacks: 0-19

Defensive backs: 0-49

Defensive linemen: 50-79 and 90-99

Tight ends, wide receivers, running backs and fullbacks: 0-49 and 80-89

Offensive linemen: 50-79

Linebackers: 0-59 and 90-99

Kickers and punters: 0-49 and 90-99

Notable NFL players who have worn the number zero jersey

As mentioned earlier, here're three notable NFL players to have worn the said jersey:

#1 Johnny Clement, quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers

Johnny Clement, known as "Mr. Zero," was the first Pittsburgh Steelers footballer to don the number zero.

He wore the number from 1946 to 1948. He participated in 25 outings and completed 86 of 228 passes for 1,630 yards and 11 scores. Along with returning kicks and punts, he ran 239 times for 991 yards and seven TDs.

#2 Johnny Olszewski, running back, Chicago Cardinals

Fourth overall in the first round of the 1953 NFL draft, John Olszewski went on to play competitively for the Chicago Cardinals, Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions.

Following the 1953 and 1955 campaigns, Olszewski was chosen to compete in the Pro Bowl. In 1962, he played his final game for the Denver Broncos in the AFL. He was one of the first NFL players to don jersey number zero and was known as Johnny O.

#3 - Obert Logan, safety, Dallas Cowboys

Obert Logan was the latest NFL player to play with the number 0 on his uniform. Before the New Orleans Saints acquired him in the 1967 expansion draft, Logan spent two years with the Dallas Cowboys. He was a safety for the Saints for one year, intercepting three throws.

The Saints cut Logan following the 1967 campaign. The Cowboys re-signed him, but they cut him before the regular season began. Logan, who was 61, died in 2003.

Notable Mentions

Jim Otto, center, Oakland Raiders

Although Jim Otto officially donned No. 00, there wasn't any NFL player tougher than him over the course of his 15-year footballing career.

Otto, the center on the all-time AFL team, had 28 knee surgeries and frequently had problems that could have been fatal because of joint replacements. He led the Raiders to the conference championship six times and was named all-AFL on ten occasions.
