DeAndre Hopkins' mother, Sabrina Greenlee, was open about the terrifying attack that altered her life.

In 2002, Greenlee suffered a blinding acid assault. After discovering that her partner had been having an affair with Greenlee, a woman flung a combination of lye and bleach on Greenlee. As per USA Today, she was abandoned for dead at a petrol station.

As Greenlee explains, "This is it, I remember thinking as I lay there. My eyes are covered by a white veil, and I start to lose vision."
Hopkins, then 10 years old, told ESPN, "I was young, I didn't grasp how serious the situation was, and I didn't know my mom wouldn't ever be able to see."

She was attacked, but was aware of what was happening; she spent 10 days in a hospital and remained in a coma. She was nearly killed in the assault, and she considered giving up at one point, but she persisted and stood by her son and daughter.

Greenlee's return to living with her family was difficult for her and her children. She battled remorse for her incapacity to look after her kids and anxieties about whether her abusers would be brought to justice. Greenlee's psychological state suffered as a result of this phase of healing. She claimed that severe melancholy forced her to remain sequestered in her chamber for more than three years.

Savannah Carlita Grant, who attacked her, received a 20-year prison term for assault and battery with the intention of murder. The partner wasn't put on trial.

Greenlee now appears at most of Hopkins' home games, where her daughter murmurs details of each play.

Greenlee has used her experience to start a nonprofit group that assists other women who have gone through similar things. Fresh Spirit Wellness supports victims of abuse.

DeAndre Hopkins has made her mother proud

NFL wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins plays for the Arizona Cardinals. The Houston Texans selected him in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft after playing college football for Clemson. Hopkins has played in five Pro Bowls and has been selected to five All-Pro teams.

DeAndre Hopkins grew up close to Central, South Carolina, and saw trauma as a kid. As a child, Steve, his dad, lost his life in a car accident while he was out on bond facing drug trafficking allegations.

When Hopkins' mother, Greenlee, lost her husband, she was only 23. When the kids were little, Greenlee worked two jobs—as an exotic dancer at night and at an automotive plant during the day.

Given his current status as one of the top wide receivers in the league and his financial resources, DeAndre Hopkins can support the woman he claims he credits for his entire career. She attends most of his home matches even though she can no longer see him play.
