Why is Baker Mayfield playing for the LA Rams?

The Los Angeles Rams have acquired quarterback Baker Mayfield after claiming him via waivers on Tuesday. The Carolina Panthers released the former first-round NFL draft selection on Monday.

The Rams were left with only John Wolford at quarterback. This was due to Matthew Stafford being placed on IR and Bryce Perkins suffering a neck injury.

For the Panthers, Baker Mayfield got the start in six matchups. With just 58% of his throws completed, he also threw six TD passes and six interceptions. He had a poor 1-5 record as the starting QB during his brief stay in Carolina.

After being relegated to backup once again, Mayfield requested his release from the Panthers. Carolina consented and here we are with Baker Mayfield in LA. Head Coach Sean McVay informed the media that the team's remaining four games of the season will likely feature the new quarterback as the starter.

Despite joining the franchise only 48 hours before the game, Mayfield ended the night tossing 22-35 for 230 yards, zero interceptions, and one TD on Thursday. He instantly demonstrated to the NFL community why he was selected first overall in 2018 and a Heisman Trophy winner.

Before Mayfield was given a chance to assist his team's offensive unit in getting back into the contest, the Rams were down by 13 points at a point. It is only fitting to assume that Mayfield has surpassed John Wolford in the Rams' quarterback depth chart due to that performance.

Mayfield's two days with a new franchise before playing as a QB was the shortest time before playing for a new team since at least 1995.

Baker Mayfield is in the record books after playing for the Rams

The Carolina Panthers had Baker Mayfield on their roster for less than six months. The Cleveland Browns acquired quarterback Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans, making Mayfield desperate to leave. He joined Carolina in July, and as such, Mayfield is only the second player selected first-overall (in the history of the common draft) to have appeared for three organizations in his first five years.

Sean McVay openly acknowledged before Thursday's matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders that it would be unusual for Mayfield to participate. Not only did he play, Baker Mayfield delivered a huge comeback win to potentially mark a turning point in his career.

We will see if that is the case in the coming weeks.
