Why do the Dallas Cowboys have a red stripe on their helmet?

The Dallas Cowboys helmet had a different look for the team's Week 14 clash against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. The Cowboys helmet generally features a white stripe down the middle that's flanked by two blue stripes. However, at the weekend, one of the blue stripes was red colored.

The Cowboys have already had three different helmets this year. In addition to their normal helmets, the Cowboys wore white helmets on Thanksgiving.

But Sunday's occasion was only the third time in 46 years that the Cowboys wore red-striped helmets. The special helmet is part of the Cowboys’ Salute to Service game to honor the United States military.

Not only did the Cowboys add the red stripe to their helmet, but they also honored 17 Medal of Honor recipients during the game. The last time the Cowboys wore the red stripe helmet was in 2021 during a game against the Denver Broncos. They first wore it in 1976 and did so for the entirety of the season.

Along with the special headgear, the entire Dallas offensive line wore cleats to honor the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation.

The Cowboys trounced the Indianapolis Colts 54-19 on Sunday as Dak Prescott threw for three touchdowns. Mike McCarthy's side is currently in second place in the NFC East with nine wins and three defeats and have all but guaranteed a playoff berth.
