Will Brandon Staley be fired? Fans call for the Chargers manager's sack

Los Angeles Chargers v Arizona Cardinals
Head coach Brandon Staley of the Los Angeles Chargers looks on in the fourth quarter of a game against the Arizona Cardinals

The Los Angeles Chargers had a 27-7 advantage against the Jacksonville Jaguars going into the second phase of their wild-card game on Saturday night after intercepting Trevor Lawrence four times, but they ultimately fell short 31-30. The defeat represented the third-largest advantage squandered in an NFL postseason game.

To make up for his terrible first-half effort, Lawrence threw four TD passes in the second half, helping the Jaguars capture their first postseason game in half a decade.

After guiding the Los Angeles Rams to the top of the defensive rankings in his first year as the defensive coordinator, Brandon Staley was arguably the most in-demand candidate for the head coaching position in 2021. After squandering a 27-0 advantage as the head coach of the Chargers, Staley is currently in the firing line in the NFL as he does not appear to have many supporters left.

By choosing to start his regular starting players in a pointless game versus the Denver Broncos, Brandon Staley may have rendered himself more susceptible in the last game of the regular season. Mike Williams, Kenneth Murray, and Joey Bosa were all forced to leave the game injured.

Additionally, Staley has undoubtedly fallen flat on enormous aspirations while guiding Justin Herbert, one of the league's top emerging passers, and making some of the league's riskiest choices.

Who is being tipped to replace Brandon Staley?

Brandon Staley had a lot of job options two years ago, but he most likely chose the Chargers because of the team's strong financial position, star quarterback Justin Herbert, stacked roster, and potential for a long postseason run.

All the good feelings around the Chargers have been extinguished in two years. Brandon Staley has been under intense pressure as a result of the club's first postseason appearance since 2018—a development that was intended to be a reason for excitement and the possibility of a fresh start.

There will undoubtedly be whispers that Sean Payton will take Staley's position in the event that Staley is sacked as a result of the terrible defeat.

According to rumors, Payton is considering hiring Justin Herbert and coaching him. Dean Spanos, the president of the Los Angeles outfit, would have to be eager to make Payton one of the league's best-paid head coaches.

After 15 years as the New Orleans Saints manager, Payton announced his retirement from the coaching profession in 2021. Due to his residency in Los Angeles and the fact that three of his former aides are currently employed by the Chargers, he has been associated with the team.
