William Jackson's trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers came as a surprise before the NFL transfer deadline. The cornerback spent just over a year with the Washington Commanders before being moved on.

Jackson, who hasn't played since Week 5 for the Commanders due to a back injury, will be hoping to get the Steelers an unlikely playoff berth this season. The Steelers are currently at the bottom of the AFC North standings with a 2-6 record.

Jackson signed a three-year, $40.5 million deal with the Commanders last offseason. As per reports, Pittsburgh will take on $3.1 million from Jackson's contract this season.

At the end of the current campaign, the Steelers will have the choice to pay Jackson $12.75 million in 2023 or take on a $9 million dead cap hit and release the cornerback.

Why did the Steelers trade William Jackson?

The Steelers' defense has not been up to the mark and yielded the second-most passing yards per game (277.3) in the NFL after Week 8. Pittsburgh has also struggled to deal with strong offensive plays throughout the campaign and were in need of a high-quality cornerback.

By acquiring Jackson, the Steelers may have addressed some of their defensive issues. The 30-year-old Jackson is blessed with speed and mirrors receivers' movements from the get-go.

Jackson tallied 16 tackles, two passes defended, and one tackle for loss this season. He looked solid for the Commanders for as long as he was available.

The cornerback wanted a fresh start in 2022 and it seems that his wish has been granted with a move to Pittsburgh. Jackson has the opportunity to become a mainstay at the back for the Steelers if he remains fit.
