Who killed Ace in One Piece?

Akainu is born in the North Blue and due to his harsh childhood, he started to have a sense of what justice really is. Akainu was also part of the Buster Call that was called upon Ohara. He ordered the destruction of the evacuation ship of the civilians and soldiers so that no scholar could escape. After the Phara incident he was promoted to Marine Admiral.

Akainu was a part of the Marineford War and he fought against the whole crew of the Whitebeard Pirates. When Whitebeard joined the battlefield he and Akainu began fighting which resulted in a rampage. As Whitebeard was old, Akainu took advantage of that fact and attacked Whitebeard which resulted in him burning a hole in Whitebeard's chest. This greatly weakened Whitebeard and seeing him weakened, Sengoku told the other Marines to focus their efforts on the pirate but Whitebeard was saved by his crew.

Luffy unconsciously unleashes his Haoshoku Haki in order to save Ace and Akainu notices this. He also sees how Luffy comes face to face with his grandfather aka Monkey D. Garp and how he hesitated in attacking Luffy and allows him to knock him down. Once Luffy freed Ace, Akainu started pursuing then and provoke Ace into attacking him by repeatedly torturing Whitebeard.

When Ace's attack backfired on him, Akainu revealed that his magma can easily overpower his fire and that is how he was able to injure Ace. He said that both Ace and Luffy should be executed because of who their parents were. Saying this he looks over to Luffy and is about to attack him but just then Ace comes in front of Luffy and acts as a shield for him.

Akainu’s attack pierces through Ace and fatally injures him. Seeing this, Marco attacked Akainu and shortly after this Ace succumbed to his injuries and passed away. This left Luffy in a trance and distraught. Akainu took advantage of this and was about to attack Luffy but Jinbei grabbed Luffy just in time and ran away.

Seeing Ace die enraged Whitebeard and he went to attack Akainu but Akainu attacked back and burned a portion of his head and sent him falling into a crater.

Akainu is known for his leadership skills and because of these qualities he was promoted to Fleet Admiral. The Marines under him are known to be very strong and very determined. He is also quite shrewd and manipulative and uses this power to deceive others in order to achieve his goals like when he succeeded in killing Ace by aiming his attack towards Luffy.

Just like the other Admirals, Akainu’s physical strength is immense and even with just his raw strength he was able to battle Whitebeard. He has impressive durability and endurance which can be seen throughout the whole Marineford War. He is also very fast and uses his power to propel himself and increase his speed. He has acute hearing skills and can even perceive underwater movements.

Devil Fruit

Akainu ate the Magu Magu devil fruit which gives him the power to create, control and transform his body into magma. This magma is very hot and highly explosive and this allows Akainu to burn everything that stands in his path. He usually transforms his arms into magma and throws his punches at enemies. His power also gives him a lot of maneuverability and he can melt through paths, grounds and can use it to also fly. This ability had great power and potential too.

Haki

Akainu can also use the Busoshoku Haki, which allows users to use their spiritual energy to create an invisible armor around themselves, giving them offensive and defensive capabilities. He uses to block and send off long distance shockwaves.

Akainu even possessed the Kenbunshoku Haki, which allows the users to use the sixth sense to sense the presence, strength and emotions of others. It even gave the user prerogative abilities.

Weapon

Akainu is seen using a dagger and a red hilted katana when is started out as a Marine.
