Javed Akhtar: A Brief Biography
Javed Akhtar was a former Pakistani cricketer and international umpire. He was an off spinner who played in only one test match for Pakistan. He was born on 21 November, 1940 in Delhi, India.
Early Career
Akhtar played first class cricket representing Rawalpindi and Services across 17 seasons as an off spinner and took 187 wickets at an average of 18.21 including 12 five wicket hauls and 3 ten wicket hauls.
He debuted for Pakistan at the age of 21 in a test match against England at Leeds in July 1962 and went wicket less. This was the only international match he played for Pakistan.
Umpiring Career
Akhtar retired from cricket in the 1975-76 season and made his umpiring debut the same year in an ODI match between Pakistan and New Zealand at Sialkot in October 1976.
He made his test umpiring debut in a match between Pakistan and Australia at Faisalabad in March 1980.
Akhtar officiated as an umpire in 18 tests and 40 ODI matches between 1976 and 1999. He served on the ICC panel from 1997 to 1999.
Controversies
Akhtar's umpiring career was full of controversies. In a Test match between England and South Africa at Headingley which was the series decider and also his last test as an official, he gave 8 questionable decisions. He was accused of bias in favour of England.
He was criticized from all corners of the cricketing world. In 2000, Ali Bacher hurled allegations of match fixing in the Headingley test against Akhtar.
Akhtar denied the claims and sued Bacher but Bacher did not turn up for the hearing. Later, Akhtar was cleared of any wrongdoing in 2002.
Retirement
Akhtar last served as an umpire in a World Cup match between England and India in 1999 in Birmingham. He died on 8 July 2016 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan at the age of 75.
