Drew Afualo

Drew Afualo's bio
Source: Instagram

Drew Afualo (b. September 18, 1995) is an American internet personality. She is famous on TikTok her comedic sketches and her roasts of discriminatory people. She is notable for filming videos from her washroom, which is the case in most of her videos.

Born and raised in Santa Ana, California, Drew was raised in a Christian household. She is of Samoan descent. She then attended the University of Hawai’i, earning two degrees and several certificate courses about the history of Pacific Islander people. She got her first job at the NFL. At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Drew ended up unemployed as the company laid off several thousands of employees. Therefore, her boyfriend at the time asked her to start posting on TikTok in the hopes of earning money. Afualo then posted her first TikTok on March 24, 2020.

Thereafter, her follower count went from under a million in August 2021 to 7.3 million on TikTok. One of Afualo’s signature aspects of her videos, is that she prides herself on spreading awareness about bigoted and discriminatory practices, which has landed her in a lot of hot water and hate mails. She points out misogynistic, transphobic, body-shaming, or just plain hateful content that is on TikTok, and then roasts the content and the people who post these videos.

In her words, according to an interview with Teen Vogue, she gets her sense of humor from her Samoan family, who she claims, ‘tend to joke all the time and roast each other.’ She also says that she learned how not to be a doormat and stand up for her community when there is an act of injustice, or whenever someone is being hateful towards them.

She is also notable for hosting the podcast “The Comment Section with Drew Afualo” available on YouTube through the channel ‘Past Your Bedtime’. The podcast currently has 16 episodes. She also hosts the podcast “Two Idiot Girls”. Afualo has been vocal about the racism she faces and the expectations of her as a person belonging to the Pacific Islander community. According to an interview with Refinery 29, she says that people have accused her of stuff that she says white women would never be accused of.

She has reportedly had her content stolen by a white woman, where the latter got more views whereas Drew did not. She says that being a non-white woman, she has been expected to “educate” and “inform” white people on what is offensive to her community and what is not, to which she responds that it is not her job to educate people when there are resources on the same online.

Recently, she got into a major controversy because she partnered with Shein, a company that has been reportedly called out for its unethical business practices. Now, according to Insider, she is known enough to have fans flood the comments of TikToks they see as misogynistic to make her see them— and her characteristic laugh has become a popular sound on the app, with women using it to clapback at sexist or bigoted comments. As of 2023, she has 8 million followers on TikTok.

Career

Source: Instagram

After completing her education from the University of Hawai’i, Drew had her first job working in the corporate department of the American National Football League (NFL) IN 2019. As she was a new hire, she was laid off during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Thereafter, driven by her boyfriend's encouragement and her own rants about college life on Snapchat, joined TikTok, and posted her first TikTok on March 24, 2020. Some of her videos where she called out hateful and bigoted content on social media caused her account to lose followers four times, and get deleted once in 2022.

She recently partnered with the fast-fashion brand Shein in 2022. However, this got her some backlash due to the brand’s unethical business practices. Drew responded to the backlash, saying that sustainable fashion is expensive, and that it currently does not cater to plus-side people or to people who do not belong to high-income communities.

She also recently partnered with the sustainable fashion brand CHNGE, where she promoted T-shirts whose profits would go to helping Ukrainian people affected by the ongoing war between their country and Russia. She and her current partner Pili Tanuvasa have launched a fitness program called “Strong Like Drew”, where she offers workout courses. The program has had two iterations so far. She currently hosts the podcast “The Comment Section” and co-hosts the podcast “Two Idiot Girls” with her sister.

Due to her rising prominence, Afualo has partnered with more commercial brands like DIRECTV and mattress brand Casper. She has appeared in the magazines Teen Vogue and Rolling Stones, as part of the latter’s Creators Issue. She also recently featured in the ‘Encounters’ column of The New York Times. In 2022, she was chosen as one of TikTok’s 2022 trailblazers, in honor of celebrating AAPI (Asian-American and Pacific Islander) Heritage Month.

The show's first season on Spotify featured notable guests such as Bretman Rock, Meghan Trainor, Shea Couleé, Monét X Change, and Tess Holliday.

In March 2023, Afualo, along with fellow TikTokers Reece Feldman and Khaby Lame, was invited to cover the 95th Academy Awards pre-show red carpet alongside YouTuber Lilly Singh. During the event, Afualo had the opportunity to interview Jamie Lee Curtis and once again encountered Dwayne Johnson.
