Career

Kjellberg stated that he drew well-known video game characters like Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog throughout his childhood, and played games on his Super Nintendo Entertainment System, including Star Fox and Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest. He regularly skipped classes in high school to play video games with friends at an Internet café and in his bedroom.

In December 2006, Kjellberg created a YouTube account with the username “Pewdie,” explaining that “pew” stands for the sound of lasers and “die” means to die. On April 29, 2010, after initially forgetting the password for this account, he created the “PewDiePie” YouTube channel. His parents refused to provide financial assistance after he dropped out of college, so he had to work as a harbor captain, sell prints of his Photoshop artwork, and run a hot dog stand to pay for his early videos.

Kjellberg first specialized in video game commentary on YouTube, especially for horror and action titles. Although he was best known for his Let’s Plays of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and its related mods, some of his first videos included commentary on popular games like Call of Duty and Minecraft. On August 15, 2013, Kjellberg’s subscribers surpassed that of the then top channel, Smosh. Guinness World Records awarded Kjellberg a certificate for having the most subscribers on YouTube. On October 31, 2013, his channel gained 15 million subscribers for the first time.

The average monthly view count for Kjellberg’s videos by 2015 was over 300 million. On September 6, 2015, it passed the 10-billion-view threshold, making history as the first channel to accomplish this. With roughly 68.8 million views at the time, “A Funny Montage” (formerly known as “Funny Montage #1”) was Kjellberg’s most popular video. Part of the reason for its high viewership was that it served as the PewDiePie channel trailer.

Due to changes in YouTube’s algorithm in 2016, the channel saw a decline in viewers, a problem shared by other content producers on the platform. It attained 50 million followers on December 8 and was the first YouTube channel to accomplish this.

PewDiePie’s Personal Life

Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg was raised in Gothenburg, where he was born on October 24, 1989. He grew up with his older sister, Fanny, and was the son of Lotta Kristine Johanna (born 1958) and Ulf Christian Kjellberg (born 1957). His mother was honored as Sweden's 2010 CIO of the Year. She was a former chief information officer (CIO). His father works in business management.

He purchased a computer during his senior year of high school using the profits from selling his artwork at his grandmother's gallery. Kjellberg later continued his studies at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg to earn a degree in industrial economics and technology management, but he left the institution in 2011. While it has been said that Kjellberg left Chalmers to concentrate on his YouTube career, he was actually unhappy with his degree program as he explained in 2017. He said it would be foolish to drop out of school to focus on a YouTube career.

Kjellberg posted a video in January 2017 that contained the n-word. On Twitter, the video attracted a lot of attention and criticism.

In another video, Kjellberg showed two Fiverr workers who had been paid to display a sign that said "Death to all Jews." He claimed that his goal was to "demonstrate how bizarre the website was," not to disparage Jews. The video gained unwanted attention and sparked a response in the media. Several outlets criticized Kjellberg's defense of his content, as he called it "jokes taken out of context" and opining that it normalizes racist, neo-Nazi, and fascist views.

The incident caused Maker Studios to terminate its relationship with Kjellberg. It also caused Google to remove him from the Google Preferred advertising program, and cancel the scheduled second season of the Scare PewDiePie YouTube Red series. Kjellberg and the two people eventually expressed regret. In the end, he expressed regret for his jokes but severely condemned the way the event had been covered by the media, including The Wall Street Journal.

PewDiePie’s Other Social Media Statistics

Kjellberg’s fame on YouTube has helped him gain fame on a plethora of other platforms. On Instagram, he has more than 21 million followers with 1,675,050 average likes. This makes him one of the most popular celebrities on the platform. He posts pictures from his daily life, selfies and much more on his Instagram account.

On Twitch, Kjellberg has 1.2 million followers even though he hasn’t streamed in quite a few years.

Kjellberg deleted his Twitter account in December of 2019 citing his frustration with the platform.
